Alexander Paynen ohjaama Havaijin huikeisiin maisemiin sijoittuva The Descendants on tragikoominen kuvaus perheestä suurten päätösten edessä. Matt King (George Clooney), kahden nuoren tytön keski-ikäinen isä, joutuu pohtimaan tulevaisuutensa ja menneisyytensä uusiksi, kun perheen äiti joutuu veneonnettomuuteen Waikikilla. Samaan aikaan kun Matt yrittää kömpelösti löytää yhteistä säveltä vieraantuneiden tytärtensä kanssa, saa hän hämmennyksekseen kuulla vaimollaan olleen suhde ennen onnettomuutta.
